This is the full guitar lesson for how to play Leader of the Band.

This song was written by American singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg and it appears on his 1981 album The Innocent Age. It was written as a tribute to his father who was himself a musician and leader of a band.

Leader of the Band went on to reach the number 9 position on the US Billboard Hot 100 in March 1982 and managed to top the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart. It has remained one of his best-known and most loved songs.

It’s such a lovely and timeless song and it’s so much fun to play on the guitar, and it’s even better if you can sing! It’s a little tricky to play at times because the fingerpicking is slightly irregular and he mixes patterns up a lot but just take your time with it and I’m sure you’ll be enjoying playing this song for many years to come.

There’s really just three sections that make up Leader of the Band – the intro (also the same as the bridge/outro), the verse and chorus. Once you’ve learnt each part you should then be able to listen to the song and stitch them all together. There’s a few small nuances here and there which are all covered in the video lesson.
