This is the full guitar lesson for The Heart of Life by John Mayer.
The Heart of Life appears on Mayer’s hugely successful 2006 album Continuum and although this song wasn’t a single, it still became one of his most loved songs amongst his fans.
This is a great song to learn if you’ve not had a go at any of Mayer’s songs before, as it’s actually one his slightly easier ones. The chord progressions are reasonably easy and it uses the same fingerpicking pattern pretty much all the way through, although at first the pattern might be a little challenging if you’ve not done it before.

This really helps and makes it easier to navigate your way through the song. Having said that, you’ll still have to get the tricky fingerpicking pattern down and learn the chord progression.
Into the chorus now and this section is no harder than the verse. There is one slight variation of the fingerpicking pattern to learn and the chord progression is different but that’s really all you have to deal with.
