The Fingerpicker’s Friend is a piece I’ve written that was inspired by fingerpicking classics such as Elizabeth Cotten’s Freight Train and Doc Watson’s Doc’s Guitar.

I’ve always loved those tunes. They’re approachable early on, but the more you practise them the better they sound, whether played slowly or lightning fast.

I wanted to write something similar. A tune that sounds good, feels natural in the hands, and is simply fun to play whatever your level.

So let’s learn how to play it.

The Fingerpicker's Friend Guitar Lesson (Part One)

The chords in the verse are simply C, F and G. The piece uses a consistent travis picking pattern throughout with a strong melody on top. Once you get it under your fingers, I’m sure you’ll be playing it for years to come.

The Fingerpicker's Friend Guitar Lesson (Part Two)

The bridge is a bit tougher than the verse. The chords are trickier and it moves faster, but don’t let that put you off. You’ll get it with a bit of time I’m sure.
