As you learn to play this fingerstyle arrangement of Take Me Home, Country Roads, be sure to frequently return to the performance as a good reference point and guide.

Take Me Home, Country Roads was written by John Denver, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert. The song was released in 1971 and has gone on to be one of John Denver’s most successful and loved songs. In this lesson, we’re learning a fingerstyle arrangement of this classic singalong.
Whilst the song itself is very simple to play and uses only very basic chords, this arrangement is actually quite advanced. You can expect to find some large stretches, difficult grips, awkward alternating bass lines and a rather tricky strumming technique that you may find difficult to get to groove. Whatever you do, don’t let that deter you as there’s so much you can learn just from this one piece.

Join The Mailing ListIn this first video we look at the short four bar intro of Take Me Home, Country Roads and the verse. Don’t feel as though you have to play every last detail the same way I have. If you want to alter the strum a little that’s absolutely fine, so long as you remain true to the melody it doesn’t matter too much.
Into the chorus now and there’s some new grips to get used to. This is also where some of the bigger stretches come in, so watch out for them too.

The bridge of Take Me Home, Country Roads is one of my favourite sections to play. It’s so much fun once you get it comfortable.
After the bridge it goes back into the chorus. However this time I’ve brought the dynamic down a little and instead of strumming we’re now fingerpicking. I think this add a really nice touch and helps to build up to the final chorus.
