In this lesson we’re going to learn how to play Spanish Study, which was written by English guitarist and teacher Frederick Noad. It’s actually a study based off of Asturias by Issac Albeniz and is a much simplified version.

This is a great piece to learn for anyone that’s still new to classical guitar, or even just fingerpicking in general (you can of course play this on a steel strung acoustic). The reason being that it’s great for developing your picking hand and establishes the fundamentals you need in your fingerpicking technique.

On top of that, it’s simply a nice piece that’s fun to play. I’m sure you’ll going to love playing it too!

OK, let’s pick up our guitars and learn how to play Spanish Study.

Spanish Study Guitar Lesson

At first, I would recommend just learning the bass notes on their own. From there you can add in the 1st string in-between each of them. The theme of always playing the 1st string in-between the bass notes runs pretty much throughout the entire piece. Then, for the final section, it also incorporates the 3rd string and switches to triplets, giving you a fast forward roll.
