Hurt was originally written by Trent Reznor for the band ‘Nine Inch Nails’ in 1994. In 2002 Johnny Cash covered the song and it ended up as his last big hit before his death in 2003.

Cash’s version is deeply moving, and the accompanying music video for the song is considered by many to be one of the greatest music videos of all time. His cover of Hurt has sold well in excess of 2,000,000 downloads in the US alone and continues to be a song that is frequently covered by many artists.

If you’ve been playing for a while then you likely won’t find Hurt difficult to play. Having said that, it’s how you play the notes that matters. If you don’t put your emotion into this song, it just won’t sound good.

The Lesson

This site is all about fingerpicking so I’m playing the song without using a pick, but of course you don’t have to play it fingerstyle if you don’t won’t to.

There are really only a few sections to Hurt and if you give the song a few listens as you learn it (this is essential to learning any song) you’ll see the structure is very straightforward too. As mentioned above, really focus on getting the notes to be played with a lot of emotion.
