Hey There Delilah was released in 2006 and is by the American rock band Plain White T’s. The song itself was written by the singer of the band Tom Higgenson.

This is a great song to learn for advancing beginner guitarists because (1) it uses a very repetitive and simple fingerpicking pattern – great if you’re wanting to get into fingerstyle – and, (2) because it has a Bm barre chord in and also a few slash chords here and there. Consequently, Hey There Delilah is ideal if you want to start working towards playing at an intermediate level.

The Lesson

Intro (0:33) – The intro to Hey There Delilah consists of just two chords – D and F#m. The fingerpicking pattern you learn here is used right the way through the entire song!

Verse (3:18) – During the second half of the verse is where you first run into the Bm barre chord and also the first slash chord. This makes this section of the song a little harder than the intro.

Chorus (7:20) – Once you’ve learnt the first two bars of the chorus you’ve basically learnt all of it because the rest of it is just those two bars repeated. This always makes learning any song that little bit easier.

Bridge (9:41) – The bridge of Hey There Delilah may be the toughest part. There’s quite a bit to remember and the chords move by pretty fast. Having said that, if you learnt all the other sections of the song you shouldn’t struggle all that much.
