6In this lesson, we’re learning how to play Basket Case by Green Day, arranged for fingerstyle guitar.
Basket Case was released in August 1994 on the band’s hugely successful album Dookie, and it went on to top the Billboard Alternative Songs chart for five weeks. It remains one of Green Day’s biggest and most recognisable hits — and it works surprisingly well as a solo fingerstyle guitar arrangement.
This arrangement is a bit of a finger-twister, but it’s a lot of fun to play and a great challenge if you’re looking to level up your technique.
Grab your guitar and let’s dive into the lesson!

The chords for this one are really just your basic open shapes – G, C, Em, D and so on, so nothing too intimidating there. The real challenge comes from the picking hand. There are all sorts of twists and turns happening, and while it feels manageable at a slow tempo, things get much trickier once the speed comes up.
Take it steady, build it up gradually… and enjoy the process!
